A ground source heat pump, also known as a ground-to-water heat pump, uses the ground’s natural heat to warm your home’s radiators or underfloor heating. For your hot taps and showers, it may also heat water that is kept in a hot water cylinder.

Thermal transfer fluid (TTF), a mixture of water and antifreeze (sometimes known as ‘brine’) flows around a loop of pipe, buried in your garden or outdoor space. This loop could be a long, coiling pipe buried in a trench or a lengthy loop (referred to as a “probe”) put into a 180mm borehole.

The fluid absorbs heat from the earth and transfers it to the heat pump through a heat exchanger. This increases the fluid’s temperature and then transmits that heat to the water.

BENEFITS OF A GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP

Low-Carbon Substitute

Gas is a fossil fuel, so it gives off carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a “greenhouse gas” that makes climate change worse.

To meet the UK’s legally required goal of having net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, fossil fuels like natural gas must be phased out and replaced with renewable energy sources. Ground source heat pumps could deliver a huge 77% saving* on emissions compared to gas.

Save Money on Your Bills

While gas boilers typically have an efficiency rating of around 90%, the average heat pump has a rating of 300%+.

On average, you could save £670 per year* on your fuel bill when you replace an old G-rated gas boiler with a ground source heat pump.

Safer and Lower Maintenance

A ground source heat pump often needs less upkeep, maintenance, and repairs than a conventional gas boiler.

Additionally, there are also very few safety issues. Since they don’t consume gas, their use has fewer dangers.

Provides Heating & Cooling

A heat pump may operate in reverse, which allows it to, like an air conditioner, remove heat from your house while it’s hot outside.

This is achieved by simply reversing the flow of refrigerant.

£6,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme Government Grant

The cost of installing a heat pump is higher than installing a standard gas or oil boiler. A three- or four-bedroom home can install an air source heat pump for an average cost of between £18,000 and £30,000 depending on size, capacity and heat pump type.
But now is the time to act with the government boiler upgrade scheme grant of £6,000. The scheme will only run until 2025 so now is the time to act if you’ve been considering an air source heat pump.

“We had an Air Source Heat Pump installed by Synergi in the summer and we’ve left it until after winter to leave a review to ensure its had a good test.

The installation was part of our self build project which included underfloor heating and radiators upstairs all of which were supplied and fitted by Synergi. We had several quotes for this project but from the start Richard made the process very simple.

If it wasn’t for Richard we would have likely ended up going for an LPG system which would have cost us a small fortune this winter.

In our first winter the house was a warm 21 degrees even in the snow and the heat pump has been providing us with a SCOP of 4.0 which means its 400% efficient. We couldn’t be happier with the installation, the customer care and the actual kit.”

How does a ground source heat pump work?

The temperature of the ground is a pretty consistent 11–12°C just two metres below the surface. We may harness this heat and use it as a dependable, renewable heat source to power central heating systems for our homes and other buildings by employing an underground network of fluid-filled pipes connected to a compressor and pump unit.

How a ground source heat pump operates is important if you’re considering installing one. The pipework, which is typically 100 metres long and is buried in loops in trenches or in one or more vertical boreholes, is the most distinguishing characteristic. Once the pipework is covered, the ground’s surface can once again be a field, garden, drive, etc., and you wouldn’t even notice it was there.

Pumped through the piping, a liquid that normally contains water and antifreeze absorbs the heat from the ground. This fluid is heated slightly by a compressor in the heat pump’s main unit, and a heat exchanger transmits the warmth to a different body of water that circulates throughout the central heating system. The cycle is restarted by pumping the now-cooled water back out to the underground piping.
