WHAT IS THE ECO 4 SCHEME?

The Eco 4 Scheme, also known as Help to Heat, is a UK government initiative aimed at reducing energy bills and fuel poverty for low-income households. The scheme provides funding to eligible households to help them make energy-efficient improvements to their homes, such as installing insulation, upgrading heating systems, or installing renewable technologies.

The Eco 4 Scheme is part of a broader scheme called the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which requires energy suppliers to provide support to eligible households to improve their energy efficiency. The scheme is funded by the big six energy companies in the UK and is overseen by Ofgem, the energy regulator.

It is specifically designed to help low-income households who are struggling to pay their energy bills and who live in properties that are hard to heat or have low energy efficiency ratings. The scheme is available in England, Scotland, and Wales and eligibility criteria may vary slightly depending on the country.

ECO 4 SCHEME CASE STUDIES

One bed, end-terraced flat constructed between 1900-1927 with a floor area of 69.97m2.

Start EPC rating: High G

End EPC rating: Low C

Background

No Solid Wall Insulation had been installed previously, there was another flat above the main house, however the extension had a loft with no loft access. The property was heated by electric room heaters and an open front fire with electric immersion water heating. The property had mains gas available allowing non-renewable heating measures to be installed.

Description of works

  • Loft Insulation, Internal Wall Insulation, and First Time Central Heating (Including a Greenstar 4000 Combi Boiler, a programmer, room thermostat and TRVs) were installed.
  • As the project included First Time Central Heating, radiators were installed throughout the property.

Three bed, semi-detached house constructed between 1967-1975 with a floor area of 136m2.

Start EPC rating: Low F

End EPC rating: Low C

Background

Cavity Wall Insulation had been previously installed, there was no Loft Insulation present and was heated by electric room heaters with electric immersion water heating. The property had mains gas available allowing non-renewable heating measures to be installed.

Description of works

  • The loft was topped up to 300mm of loft insulation.
  •  First Time Central Heating (Including a Greenstar 8000 Style Combi boiler, a programmer, room thermostat and TRVs) were installed.
  • As the project included First Time Central Heating, radiators were also installed throughout the property.

four bed, mid-terraced house constructed before 1900 with a floor area of 107.04m2.

Start EPC rating: High F

End EPC rating: Low B

Background

50mm of Internal Wall Insulation had previously been installed, there was already 270mm of loft insulation present with electric room heaters as the Pre-Main Heating Source with electric immersion water heating. Mains gas was not available in the property meaning the off -gas hierarchy had to be followed.

Description of works

  • An Air Source Heat Pump, Programmer, Room Thermostat, TRVs and a 3.6kWp Photovoltaic system were installed.
  • The PV system had an inclination of 30° and an orientation of South.
  • The project also received the off -gas uplift as the property was off -gas and in a rural location.

“We had an Air Source Heat Pump installed by Synergi in the summer and we’ve left it until after winter to leave a review to ensure its had a good test.

The installation was part of our self build project which included underfloor heating and radiators upstairs all of which were supplied and fitted by Synergi. We had several quotes for this project but from the start Richard made the process very simple.

If it wasn’t for Richard we would have likely ended up going for an LPG system which would have cost us a small fortune this winter.

In our first winter the house was a warm 21 degrees even in the snow and the heat pump has been providing us with a SCOP of 4.0 which means its 400% efficient. We couldn’t be happier with the installation, the customer care and the actual kit.”
